Charlie Ben (b. Bologna, 1998) is an Italian painter who grew up in Bergamo and now works between Amsterdam and Itacaré, Brazil, drawn to what cannot be fully explained: emotion in motion, the instability of certainty, and the tension between clarity and doubt. His practice is rooted in the emotional residue of place, the charge that accumulates in unfamiliar rooms, unfinished conversations, the distance between what is known and what is felt. Working across studio residencies in Amsterdam, Berlin, São Paulo, Milan, Crotone, Bergamo, and Enschede, the Painter has developed a language of gesture that is at once intimate and insistent, never declarative.

His canvases do not resolve. They hold open a space, between mark and erasure, between emotion and its aftermath, and ask the viewer to remain there. Each painting is built up in powdered pigments, acrylics, and wax crayons — a stratification in which every layer records a decision: some left visible, like the cracking of the paint or the powdered matter of the pigment; others held beneath, like the brushstrokes underneath. Each work is the outcome of construction and, at the same time, the erasure of form. His paintings live in that in between. They refuse a single interpretation and invite projection.

What the Painter calls into question is not the image but the act of looking itself. His work refuses to be read the same way twice. What pulls you in, what you skip, what you return to becomes part of the piece, and a clue about you.
